Determination of Youngs Modulus using Cornus Method

Technical Specifications

The Determination of Young’s Modulus Using Cornu’s Method apparatus from AGN Enterprises is an advanced optics and mechanics laboratory setup designed to determine the Young’s modulus of the material of a beam by Cornu’s optical method.

The illustrated setup combines a bending arrangement, optical microscope, travelling/measurement mechanism, illuminated scale arrangement, loading accessories, and electrical illumination unit. The experiment enables students to measure very small changes in the curvature or bending of a beam through an optical technique.

Because the method combines elasticity, bending theory, and precision optical measurement, it provides an excellent undergraduate experiment for understanding the mechanical properties of materials.

The apparatus is suitable for physics laboratories, engineering physics laboratories, colleges, universities, polytechnics, and technical institutes.

Determination of Young’s Modulus Using Cornu’s Method Equipment Used
  1. Six-Position Travelling Microscope – This device is used to carefully observe and measure the movement of interference fringes during the experiment.
  2. Sodium Lamp Assembly – It provides a single-color light source, which is essential for creating clear and well-defined interference patterns.
  3. Sample Glass Plate with Plano-Convex Lens – This setup is used to create the necessary optical configuration for observing the interference effects and analyzing the material’s elastic behavior.
  4. Slotted Weights Set – These weights are used to apply a controlled amount of force to the sample, allowing for the measurement of its deformation and the calculation of Young’s modulus.
This experimental arrangement allows for the precise calculation of Young’s modulus and other elastic properties of transparent materials using optical interference techniques based on Cornu’s method.

Care and Maintenance

Users should keep the microscope lenses and optical components clean and free from dust.

They should protect the mechanical assembly from corrosion and excessive moisture. In addition, users should move fine-adjustment mechanisms gently and avoid applying unnecessary force.

After completing the experiment, students should remove the applied loads, switch off the illumination unit, and store the apparatus in a clean and dry laboratory environment.
