Potometer Demonstration Apparatus

The apparatus is designed to measure transpiration efficiently while offering enhanced durability. It features a single glass capillary tube securely mounted on a robust backing plate with a clearly marked 0–10 cm graduated scale. A freshly cut plant shoot is placed into the inlet tube, which is connected to the mounted syringe and capillary tube through a three-way tap. For humidity measurement, a porous pot can be connected to the third outlet, allowing the apparatus to perform dual functions.

Potometer Demonstration Apparatus for Plant Transpiration Studies

The Potometer Demonstration Apparatus from AGN Enterprises is a biology laboratory teaching apparatus designed to demonstrate and investigate the rate of water uptake by a plant shoot as an indirect indication of transpiration.

The apparatus provides students with a practical way to observe how environmental conditions can influence water uptake. It is useful for school biology laboratories, colleges, universities, teacher-training institutions, and science education centres.

Features of Potometer Demonstration Apparatus

  • Designed for demonstrating plant transpiration
  • Useful for studying water uptake by plant shoots
  • Supports practical biology experiments
  • Suitable for classroom demonstrations
  • Helps investigate factors affecting transpiration
  • Provides an observable experimental response
  • Suitable for educational and laboratory use
  • Useful for student observation and data recording

Working Principle

A potometer measures the uptake of water by a cut plant shoot. In a typical setup, the shoot is connected to a water-filled apparatus containing a fine capillary tube. As the shoot loses water through transpiration, it draws water from the apparatus.

The movement of an air bubble or water meniscus within the capillary can be observed over a measured period. The distance travelled can then be used to estimate the rate of water uptake.

Importantly, water uptake is used as an indirect measure of transpiration, because not all water absorbed by a plant is necessarily lost through transpiration.

Applications

The Potometer Demonstration Apparatus can be used for:

  • Demonstrating transpiration
  • Investigating water uptake in plants
  • Studying factors affecting transpiration
  • Comparing transpiration under different conditions
  • Biology practical experiments
  • Classroom demonstrations
  • Plant physiology lessons
  • Teacher-training activities
  • Practical science education

Students can investigate variables such as light intensity, air movement, temperature, and humidity, provided the experimental setup is appropriately controlled.

Potometer Demonstration in Biology Laboratory

The apparatus allows students to observe plant water movement rather than studying transpiration only theoretically.

A typical experiment involves placing a suitable leafy shoot into the apparatus and ensuring that the system is properly sealed. As water is taken up by the shoot, movement within the capillary can be monitored.

By recording the movement over a known period, students can compare water-uptake rates under different experimental conditions.

Educational Benefits

The apparatus helps students understand important plant-physiology concepts, including:

  • Transpiration
  • Water absorption
  • Water movement through plants
  • Stomatal function
  • Environmental effects on transpiration
  • Experimental variables
  • Measurement and data analysis

Furthermore, it encourages students to develop practical skills such as controlling variables, taking repeated readings, recording observations, and interpreting experimental results.

Suitable for Schools and Biology Laboratories

The Potometer Demonstration Apparatus is suitable for:

  • School biology laboratories
  • College laboratories
  • University biology departments
  • Teacher-training institutions
  • Science education centres
  • Plant physiology teaching laboratories

Before ordering, institutions should confirm the required apparatus configuration, capillary dimensions, mounting arrangement, materials, included components, and specimen requirements.

Why Choose Potometer Demonstration Apparatus from AGN Enterprises?

AGN Enterprises supplies educational and laboratory equipment for schools, colleges, universities, research institutions, and scientific laboratories.
