It is a high-precision optical instrument widely used for accurate wavelength measurement, comparison of spectral lines, and detailed examination of hyperfine structures. It also enables the study of wavelength shifts under external fields, such as the Zeeman effect in magnetic fields.
The system incorporates a partially coated mirror mounted in an aluminium housing, positioned in front of a moving mirror to establish the Fabry–Perot cavity. Two fine adjustment screws are provided to ensure accurate parallelism of the etalons. An inbuilt telescope (3× magnification) with a Ramsden eyepiece and crossline graticule allows sharp and precise observation of interference fringes.
