It is a precision optical instrument designed for spectral analysis in the visible region (4000 Å – 7000 Å). It is especially suited for accurate observation, identification, and measurement of spectral lines in teaching laboratories and research institutions. The instrument uses a constant deviation prism assembly, allowing the wavelength scale to be read directly without changing the position of the prism during measurements. Built with robust cast iron base and mountings for stability, the C.D.S. incorporates high-quality collimating and telescope optics, a precision prism table with tangent screw, and a calibrated drum for wavelength readings.

Collimating Tube

Material: Brass pipe, O.D. 50 mm, I.D. 44 mm (for fitting collimating lens).
Provided with rack & pinion arrangement and circular slit.
Slit jaws are optically ground.
Fitted with Holfmann’s diaphragm for precise control of light.

Telescope Tube

Material: Brass pipe, O.D. 50 mm, I.D. 44 mm (for fitting telescope lens).
Rack & pinion focussing arrangement for sharp spectral lines.
Eyepiece: Ramsden type, 10× magnification, fitted with a conical pointer in the focal plane.

Optics

Corrected achromatic doublets in collimator and telescope lenses.
Doublet: Diameter 44 mm, Focal Length 350 mm (14″).

Mechanical Construction

Collimator and telescope tubes fitted on machined cast iron blocks, mounted on a rigid cast iron plate.
Prism Table:
- Mounted on cast iron plate.
- Operated by tangent screw for smooth prism rotation.
- Designed with sufficient gap to accommodate high-resolution instruments like Fabry–Perot Etalon.
- Covered with aluminium casting box having two gates (for incident and emergent light paths).

Calibration

Calibrated drum for visible region (4000 Å – 7000 Å).
Accuracy: ± 5 Å.

Finish & Stability

Base and cast iron plate painted staple grey.
Collimator, telescope, prism table, and drum assembly painted black.
Heavy cast iron base ensures rigidity and vibration-free operation.
