E/M by Millikan’s Oil Drop Method for Physics Laboratories
The E/M by Millikan’s Oil Drop Method experiment introduces students to the behaviour of microscopic oil droplets under the influence of an electric field. A typical experimental arrangement consists of an atomizer, a chamber containing two parallel metal plates, a variable voltage supply, an illumination system, and an optical viewing arrangement. Together, these components allow students to observe and investigate the motion of charged droplets. During the experiment, the atomizer produces extremely fine oil droplets, which enter the region between the parallel plates. Some droplets acquire an electrical charge. When students apply a potential difference across the plates, an electric field develops and exerts a force on the charged droplets. Meanwhile, gravity pulls the droplets downward, while air resistance affects their movement. By adjusting the applied voltage, students can observe changes in droplet motion and investigate the relationship between electrical and gravitational forces.
