The atomic energy levels, the transitions between these levels, and the associated spectral lines discussed to this point have implicitly assumed that there are no magnetic fields influencing the atom. If there are magnetic fields present, the atomic energy levels are split into a larger number of level sand the spectral lines are also split. This splitting is called the Zeeman Effect. It consists of following instruments: –

Technical Specifications

  • Collimating Tube:
    • Brass pipe construction, O.D. 50 mm, I.D. 44 mm.
    • Fitted with circular type optically ground slit and Holfmann’s diaphragm.
    • Rack & pinion arrangement for smooth focusing.
  • Telescope Tube:
    • Brass pipe, O.D. 50 mm, I.D. 44 mm.
    • Rack & pinion focusing for accurate spectral line observation.
    • Eyepiece: Ramsden type, 10× magnification, with conical pointer in the focal plane.
  • Optics:
    • Corrected achromatic doublets fitted in lens holders of both collimator and telescope.
    • Doublet: Diameter 44 mm, Focal Length 350 mm (14″).
  • Prism Table:
    • Mounted on a machined cast iron plate, actuated by tangent screw for smooth rotation.
    • Sufficient gap provided between collimator lens and prism table to accommodate Fabry–Perot Etalon for high-resolution studies.
    • Aluminium casting cover with dual gates (incident & emergent light paths).
  • Calibration:
    • Drum calibrated for the visible spectrum (4000 Ã… – 7000 Ã…).
    • Accuracy: ±5 Ã….
  • Mechanical Construction:
    • Collimator, telescope, prism table, and drum assembly mounted on a rigid cast iron base.
    • Base painted staple grey, optical assemblies painted black.
    • Total Weight: 20 kg for stable, vibration-free operation.
